On Friday night at Hartford's Convention Center former Light Heavyweight Kingpin Bad Chad Dawson defeated Denis Grachev by lopsided unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC USNBC 175 pound belt. The eight-rounder was the Main Event of a seven bout card presented by Rhode Island based promoter Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports. Like New Haven based Chad Dawson, four more CT boxers saw action on the card.

The room where boxing is held at Hartford's Convention Center is all cement and filled with dimly lit spaces with concessions kiosks set-up along the perimeter. It's reminiscent of a place where a despot's political opponents are herded and then machine-gunned or where Wesley Snipes' Blade might chase a dozen undead and wage the first skirmish of a vampire apocalypse. This Friday night it hosted current area prizefighters and the past CT luminaries of the ring came out to watch; at ringside were former undisputed Welterweight Champion Marlon Starling, top-ranked lightweight Israel Pito Cardona and top-ranked super-lightweight & welterweight Sucra Ray Oliveira.

Back in the ring just 103 days after his last win, the Elm City's Bad Chad Dawson scaled 175lbs for the 8-rounder versus Chaykovsky, Russia's Denis Grachev, also 175lbs, now fighting out of San Diego, CA. Dawson looked sharp and speedy of fist from the start, fighting cautiously from the southpaw stance in the early rounds. By the third he was throwing hard right hooks and thumping Grachev on his way in with straight lefts. The first and fourth were dull as both fighters looked for openings and Grachev struggled to get inside on the defensively superior Dawson. In the sixth when Dawson was landing heavier in the final minute Grachev caught him with a short shot the stunned Dawson badly. Grachev was unable to follow-up but it may have swung the round in his favor.
In the final rounds Dawson got right back to work behind his jab, making Grachev pay for his aggressiveness with straight lefts that blunted his forward movement.

At the end of eight the scorecards were 80-72 x 2 and 79-73 all in favor of Bad Chad Dawson who improved to 36-5(19) while Grachev dropped to 19-9-1 (10).

Afterwards Dawson told the crowd he hoped for one more world title shot and that he feels more like he's 25 years old and not 37.

New London, CT, heavyweight Cassius Chaney remained undefeated with a first round one-punch kayo of Satinder Silgado of Arboletes, Colombia. The taller Chaney, 254lbs, pawed at Silgado, 228lbs, circled, then fired two quick nothing jabs to blind him followed by a pole-axe of a right cross that thumped aginst Silgado's chin putting him out and flat on his back. Chaney stood there looking down at his flattened opponent and for a second he struck a pose very similar to his namesake, and the Greatest of All Time, a young Cassius Clay.

Seeing that he could have counted to fifty, referee Danny Schiavone waved off the bout at 1:03 of the first. Chaney jumped to 17-0 (11) while Silgado fell to 28-8 (22).

Making his return to the prize ring for the first time since losing by stoppage in July on the Pacquiao-Thurman undercard, New Haven's Jimmy Williams had to settle for a draw against Jose Medina of Guadalajara, Mexico. Williams controlled the first two rounds with his jab and straight punches but as the rounds wore on Medina found shots of his own were effective, especially the jab he slammed Williams' chin with in the 3rd and fourth. Williams rebounded in the final two rounds, landing a heavy left hook in the fifth that seemed to hurt Medina.

At the end of six rounds the judges couldn't come to a satisfying conclusion; one seeing it 58-56 Williams, another 58-56 Medina and the third 57-57, even, resulting in a draw. For whatever it's worth, this observer saw it 58-56 for Jimmy Williams but the third and sixth were very close.

Williams' record now stands at 16-3-2 (5) and Medina's at 18-17-2 (7).

New Britain's Nathan Martinez, 123lbs, defeated Steve Garagarza, also 123lbs, of Houston, TX, in the most exciting fight of the night. Both fighters dispensed with any semblance of a feeling-out round, meeting in ring center and opening up with both hands to exchange power-shots. Martinez's blows looked harder immediately but Garagarza seemed to steel himself against them and weathered the heaviest blasts. At times Garagarza appeared the busier fighter but it was Martinez landing the more damaging blows, especially in the final round when it appeared he was close to scoring a knockdown.

After four the judges saw it 40-36 x 2 and 39-37 all in favor of hard-hittin' New Britain's own Nathan Martinez, now 6-0 (2), while Steve Garagarza fell to 1-2-1 (1).

Hartford's Sharad Collier, 133lbs, defeated Glenn Mitchell, 131lbs, of Steubenville, OH, by fourth round TKO. Collier got off the deck from a flash knockdown in round one, only to come right back and score one of his own before round's end. Mitchell was so badly buzzed he even tackled Collier to avoid being stopped. In the third Collier stalked Mitchell and had he been in slightly better shape he may have been able to stop him in the third but he looked arm-weary and drained from chasing Mitchell.

In the fourth Collier closed the show and when he started nailing Mitchell cleanly again referee Mike Ortega stepped in and called it off at 2:12 of round number 4.

Collier improved to 3-0-1 (3) while Mitchell dropped to 3-4 (3).

Jahvel Joseph, 171lbs of the Bronx, NY made a successful pro debut against Leandro Silva, 176lbs, of Sao Paolo, Brazil. Joseph brought quite a group of supporters to Hartford and they cheered for him enthusiastically throughout his first fight. Silva was never hurt but was nailed repeatedly by speedy slashing shots from his taller quicker opponent. Joseph controlled the pace and progress of the bout from the start and at the end of four was rewarded for his efforts. The judges saw it 40-36 x 2 and 39-37, all for Jahvel Joseph, now 1-0, while Leandro Silva dropped to 1-3 (1).

In the first bout of the night Jalen Renaud, 153lbs, of Springfield, MA, defeated Maceo Crowder, 160 1/2 lbs, of Roxbury, MA, by four round unanimous decision. Crowder was dropped in the first, got up but seemed to be fighting at the pace required for a six rounder while Renaud was the far busier and more effective through the scheduled four. At the finish the scorecards were 40-35 x 3 all in favor of Renaud, now 2-0, while Crowder leaves with a record of 2-3 (1).KOFantasyBoxinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05342210842842165222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222101799894188186.post-65791011493673838712019-10-07T13:11:00.002-04:002019-10-07T13:11:19.080-04:00Canelo versus The Krusher is on...

"We promised to make this fight happen, and now we are delivering it," said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. "Historic fights have been a hallmark of this company, and we are pleased to once again live up to the high expectations we've set for our fans. The best pound-for-pound fighter is also boxing's biggest star. Few fighters in boxing's history can claim to be both like Canelo Alvarez. Now, he'll look to become a four-division world champion against one of the most dangerous fighters of recent years, and I'm certain that he will stop him. There's no better home for this than on the DAZN platform or live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas."

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Canelo, the 29-year-old native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, became the face of boxing by taking on some of the biggest names in the sport. At 154 pounds, Canelo captured several world titles and defeated the likes of Austin "No Doubt" Trout, Sugar Shane Mosley, Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo, Erislandy "The American Dream" Lara and Liam "Beefy" Smith.

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
At 160 pounds, Canelo defeated Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and Daniel "Miracle Man" Jacobs to establish himself as the king of the middleweight division. And, shortly after signing a groundbreaking partnership with global sports streaming giant DAZN, Canelo moved into the 168-pound division by stopping Rocky Fielding in three rounds to become the WBA Super Middleweight World Champion.

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Canelo will now look to make history once again by becoming the second Mexican boxer to hold a world title in the light heavyweight division, a feat only done byJulio Cesar Gonzalez in 2003. The pound-for-pound king will at the same time join an elite group of four-division world champions from Mexico.

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"The second phase of my career is continuing just as we had planned, and that's why we are continuing to make great fights to enter into the history books of boxing," said Canelo Alvarez. "That's also why I've decided to jump two weight classes against one of the most feared champions of recent years. Kovalev is a dangerous puncher, and he's naturally the bigger man, but that's the kind of challenges and risks that I like to face."

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
On November 2nd, Kovalev, 36, will participate in his 17th consecutive world title bout and the most lucrative fight of his career against the biggest star in boxing. A Russian knockout artist and three-time light heavyweight world champion, "Krusher" is no stranger to fighting in hostile territory. He captured the WBO Light Heavyweight World Title in 2013 when he traveled to Wales and scored a stunning knockout of Nathan Cleverly. Kovalev traveled to Atlantic City to meet future Hall of Famer Bernard "The Alien" Hopkins near his Philadelphia home to unify the WBO, WBA and IBF titles with a lopsided unanimous decision victory in 2014. As unified champion, "Krusher" successfully defended his titles twice against current WBA Interim Light Heavyweight titleholder Jean Pascal in Pascal's hometown of Montreal, scoring a stoppage victory both times.

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Kovalev suffered two controversial losses to former Olympic Gold medalist Andre Ward (in 2016 and 2017) and a surprise upset to Eleider Alvarez last year, but quickly regained his WBO Light Heavyweight Title each time. In August, the road warrior finally got the chance to fight in his own hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia, stopping undefeated mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde in a sold-out arena.

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
When asked about this fight, Kovalev said, "In order to be the best you have to beat the best. I have always tried to fight the toughest opponents in my division, but many have ducked me throughout my career. Canelo wanted to fight me; to step up to higher weight and challenge for my belt. I will be ready on November 2nd. Thank you, Main Events, Kathy Duva, Egis Klimas, DAZN and Canelo for making this fight happen."

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Canelo is to be praised for asking to challenge Sergey Kovalev," added Main Events' CEO Kathy Duva. "Win or lose, he will make history and Sergey is extremely pleased to get the chance to test his mettle against another future Hall of Famer." She continued, "Anyone who cares at all about the Sweet Science should circle November 2nd on their calendar. I have a feeling that this will be one for the ages."

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Canelo vs. Kovalev is a fascinating matchup between champions that will highlight our entire season of premium fights on DAZN over the next several months," said DAZN Group Executive Chairman John Skipper. "Simply stated, this is the best schedule in boxing history."

<div class="font_8" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: arial, "ms pゴシック", "ms pgothic", 돋움, dotum, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Richard Sturm, President of Las Vegas Live Entertainment and Sports, said, "We look forward to hosting this tremendous matchup between Canelo and Kovalev at MGM Grand in November. These two great fighters always put on a fantastic show and we are confident they will, once again, provide boxing fans worldwide a thrilling fight when they return to Las Vegas."

Canelo vs. Kovalev is a 12-round fight for the WBO Light Heavyweight World Title presented by Golden Boy, Main Events and Krusher Promotions. The event is sponsored by Tecate, "THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING," Hennessy "Never Stop. Never Settle" and Brand-New Grapefruit Crush, Knockout Flavor. The event will take place Saturday, Nov. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

just getting started here at @FoxwoodsCT with #BroadwayBoxing 1st
bout is up now...

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Nelson
Perez 135lbs of Marlboro MA battles Devon Grant 140lbs of New York,
NY in a scheduled 4 rounder
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Nelson
Perez picks up the win with a one punch TKO. the time was 2:04 of the
2nd. he's now 2-0 (2).
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

Second
bout is up now, females, 6 rounder featuring Helen Joseph 118lbs of
New Haven, CT 16-3-2 (10) vs. Martina Horgasz 118lbs of Budapest,
Hungary 5-3 (4) #BroadwayBoxing
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Some
good solid body punching in round one by Helen Joseph
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Joseph
had Horgasz on the run at the end of round four. Horgasz has her long
hair tied in a braid that came loose in the last round causing a
timeout to try and secure it. Seems like the corner tied it up
securely before the fifth. Horgasz has a lot more to worry about in
Joseph
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Joseph's
corner is asking for "more than one!" punch from their
fighter as she's following Horgasz and not applying enough pressure.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Final
round coming up now. Horgasz needs a kayo.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">This
is a weird equipment failure fight. First the braid of the fighter in
the blue corner needed attention and now the red corner fighter's
foul protector falls off and hits the canvas with half the final
round to go.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Helen
Jospeph picks up a UD by scores of 60-53 x 3 and improves to 17-3-2
(10). Martina Horgasz drops to 5-4 (4)
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

Next
up, Jacob Marrero 127lbs of Bridgeport, CT 3-0 (2) vs. Juan Ibarra
127lbs making his pro debut
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Wow!
Jacob Marrero just made short work of debuting Juan Ibarra, dropping
him twice with short chopping blasts of the left hand. The time was
2:06 of round number one.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

here
we go with bout number 4, Stephan Shaw 251lbs of St Louis MO, 11-0
(8) vs. Willie Jake Jr. 233lbs of Indianapolis, IN, 8-2-1 (2)
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Stephen
Shaw has BIG SHOT written across the front of his trunks and he
landed it in the form of a left hook that sat Jake down with about a
minute to go in the first. Jake had been doing the bulk of the
boxing--a busy jab--up until that moment.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Shaw
did so little punching and so much waiting in that second he may have
lost the round despite a massive advantage in power. It doesn't count
unless it lands.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Jake
was just sent right through the ropes and almost into a judge's lap
as Shaw scores a second knockdown.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Jake
dropped again under a barrage of punches including several heavy
rights. He is up and on steady legs again at nine and referee Johnny
Callas lets it continue.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Referee
Johnny Callas waved this one off in the 4th with Shaw crashing lefts
and rights against the head of Willie Jake Jr. The time was :56 of
round 4.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">@KO_MoC86 makes
her way to the ring @FoxwoodsCT for #BroadwayBoxing
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Here
we go with @KO_MoC86 142lbs
of Providence, RI 15-7-1 (5) vs. Patricia Juarez 142lbs of Colorado
4-1 #BroadwayBoxing
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Kali
Reis in charge thus far. She's slighter of build but she doesn't seem
to have lost any power. Her body shots look solid and she thumping
Juarez to the head repeatedly with her right. Juarez bleeding.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">HUGE
uppercut from Kali Reis and Juarez still coming forward.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Kali
Reis should walk away with a Unanimous Decision here. waiting on
scorecards…
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">All
three officials see it 60-54 in favor of Providence,
RI's @KO_MoC86 who improves to 16-7-1 (5), fighting at the
lightest weight she's ever scaled as a pro, 142lbs. She debuted 11
years ago at 143.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">
Next
up, Hurshidbek Normatov 152lbs of Brooklyn, NY vs. Walter Wright
154lbs of Seattle WA
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Contender
alum Walter Wright being aggressive here but Normatov has been able
to snake hard punches through the veteran's raised guard. In round
four now, Normatov turning up the heat, Wright responding.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">That
fourth round looked close. Wright scored with a speedy right hand
that Normatov never saw coming.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Normatov
getting things done in spurts of speedy, jolting accurate punches.
Then he rolls out with Wright in pursuit but mostly coming up empty.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Wright
just stopped and stared at Normatov, impatiently waiting for the
Uzbek to stop circling and start fighting. Normatov is winning,
controlling most exchanges, but he does spend great portions of time
on the run, watching but not punching.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Final
round coming up. Normatov was looking up at the clock at the end of
the seventh. He doesn't looked gassed out at all so maybe he was just
curious.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Normatov
watched the timer incessantly in that final frame but goes the
distance in his longest bout to date, an 8 rounder. And he should
come away with a lopsided victory even if there were some real lulls
in the action, that may have been because he was concerned about
going 8
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The
scorecards were 80-72 x 2 and 79-73 all in favor of Hurshibek
Normatov, who picks up the WBA, NABA, USA Super Welterweight Title
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

here's
the co-main event, Alicia Napoleon-Espinosa 161lbs of Lindenhurst,
NY, 11-1 (6) vs. Schemelle Baldwin 163lbs of Newark, DE 3-0-1 (2)
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Alicia
Napoleon-Espinosa is a lot speedier and she's out-quicking Schemelle
Baldwin through 2. Third round underway now and Napoleon-Espinosa
hammering at Baldwin in a corner.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Baldwin
took a lot of punishment in that third round. There's an abrasion on
the bridge of her nose.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">That's
a good stoppage. Baldwin absorbing a lot of punishment and really not
firing back in any sort of sustained manner. Showing zero resistance
to the assault of Alicia Napoleon-Espinosa. The referee steps between
the fighters in round 4. The official time was 1:30
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

Here
comes the Main Event... Toka Kahn Clary 128lbs of Providence RI 26-2
(18) vs. Irvin Gonzalez 127lbs of Worcester, MA 12-1 (9)
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Freddie
Roach is in the Two-oh-three tonight! #EastCoast #BroadwayBoxing
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">these
guys have quick hands! Toka Kahn Clary landed with a bit more power
in a speedy, feeling-out first round
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Clary
cracked Gonzalez twice with single shots in the second round. He
wasn't able to follow-up on either but no doubt got Gonzalez's
attention.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Clary
is incredibly quick. This fight is fun to watch because these guys
are exploding forward behind power-shots and both guys are trying to
land big.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Wow!
Absolutely thrilling close to round 5. Irvin Gonzalez coming on,
blasting away at Clary along the ropes. This crowd was screaming.
Almost a really dangerous moment there too, when Clary's arm got
tangled in the rope as he was firing back at Gonzalez. He quickly
freed himself
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">I
think Gonzalez has won at least two rounds here, and they were the
last two. Feels like a momentum shift. Seventh round begins.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Gonzalez
had changed the firing zone in that sixth round and closed the
distance to one that favored him but in the seventh Clary
reestablished his own favored distance, exploding in behind smashing
single-shot lefts to the head
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Clary
scoring with the right up-jab to Gonzalez un-rushing chin.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Toka
Kahn Clary back in control with just the 9th and tenth remaining.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Clary
had Gonzalez along the ropes in a neutral corner for at least a
minute of that final round but he was never able to hurt Gonzalez.
Both fighters did a lot of missing and landing speedy glancing blows.
Clary did more damage overall, no doubt, bloodying the nose of
Gonzalez
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">Scores
are 98-92 and 99-91 x 2 all in favor of Toka Kahn Clary who picks up
the WBA/NABA/USA Super Featherweight title.

Last night super-quick Toka Kahn Clary 128lbs of Providence RI returned to the Fox Theater for the second time this year, and defeated Irvin Gonzalez 127lbs of Worcester, MA. Clary headlined an eight bout card promoted by DiBella Entertainment as part of their Broadway Boxing series.

Clary and his HOF trainer used a game plan that capitalized on the Rhode Islander's explosive speed of hand and foot. Clary exploded in behind two-punch combinations and controlled the distance for much of the fight. Gonzalez was the aggressor but often Clary blunted his rushes with a well-timed jab. Gonzalez had his moments, especially in rounds five and six, but overall it was Clary who controlled the tempo and repeatedly connected with more punches and more power.

At the end of ten the judges saw it 98-92 and 99-91 twice all in favor of Toka Kahn Clary. Clary raised his record to 27-2 (18) while Gonzalez dropped to 12-2 (9)

In the co-feature, rising star Alicia Napoleon-Espinosa 161lbs of Lindenhurst, NY stopped Schemelle Baldwin 163lbs of Newark, DE in 4 rounds. Napoleon-Espinosa started fast and had Baldwin on the defensive and absorbing punishment right away. In the third, Baldwin leaned back against the ropes as Napoleon-Espinosa strafed her with shots to the body and head. At the bell Baldwin returned to her corner on unsteady legs with blood coming from an abrasion on her nose.

In the fourth Napoleon-Espinosa drove her back into that same spot, hammering at her until referee Al LoBianco stepped between them, halting the contest at 1:30.

Napoleon-Espinosa improved to 12-1 (7) while Baldwin dropped to 3-1-1 (2).

Kali Reis 142lbs of Providence, RI defeated Patricia Juarez 142lbs of Colorado. All three judges scored it 60-54 in favor of Reis. Weighing a pound lighter than in her professional debut almost eleven years ago, Kali Reis won a lopsided unanimous decision over the rugged and aggressive Juarez. Reis, usually a counter-puncher, fought at a busier pace on this night, perhaps due to a combination of her lighter frame and the pressing attack of Juarez. Reis made her pay for her aggression repeatedly with hard uppercuts and thumping shots to the body.

At the end of six the judges saw it a shut-out, with three scores of 60-54.

Reis improved to 16-7-1 (5) while Juarez fell to 4-2.

Hurshidbek Normatov 152lbs of Brooklyn, NY beat Walter Wright 154lbs of Seattle WA by lopsided unanimous decision. Normatov, a native of Uzbekistan, now living in the Big Appple, faced a cagey veteran in Wright and seemed content to go the distance, get the experience and notch a victory. For his part Wright certainly tried to challenge the Uzbek but he was unable to keep the slicker, speedier fighter in one place long enough to land anything significant. Normatov fought in bursts, slamming Wright with multiple shots and then rolling away from harm. At the end of eight rounds the judges thought he'd done it perfectly on 2 cards at 80-72 but one judge saw Wright winning one round at 79-73.

Normatov raised his record to 9-0 (3) while Wright's fell to 17-7 (8).

Bridgeport, CT's Jacob Marrero, 127lbs, scored his third kayo victory in 4 fights, stopping debuting Juan Ibarra, 127lbs, of Willow Springs, NC. Marrero surged out of his corner to the cheers of a large crowd of supporters and started banging with Ibarra from the start. Both southpaws and both looking to land heavily early, it was Marrero who connected and Ibarra reeled forward off balance. Ibarra was up quickly and the referee allowed him to continue but Marrero was on him again immediately. Two heavy lefts put Ibarra down a second time and the bout was waved off. The official time was 2:06 of round one.

Marrero raises his record to 3-0 (2) while Juan Ibarra turned pro, now 0-1.
Helen Joseph 118lbs of New Haven, CT dominated Martina Horgasz 118lbs of Budapest, Hungary in a six round female super bantamweight bout. Joseph attacked Horgasz' mid-section from the start, slamming hooks against the Hungarian's ribcage and driving her back into corners in the early rounds. By the end of the fourth the fight assumed a similar pattern, Jospeh pressing, pursuing and Horgasz on the run, under fire. At the end of six the decision was unanimous in favor of the aggressive Helen Joseph, all three judges seeing it 60-54.

Heavyweight Stephan Shaw 251lbs of St Louis MO stopped Willie Jake Jr. 233lbs of Indianapolis, IN
The time was :56 of round 4. Shaw did a lot of waiting in round one as Jake Jr let his hands go and smacked away his taller, heavier opponent. But it was clear right away that whenever Shaw connected cleanly he could hurt Jake and get him in trouble. He dropped him once in the first, Jake may have one the second just by pecking, poking and staying away but it was short-lived. In the third Shaw put Jake down twice and referee Johnny Callas allowed him to continue.

At the start of the fourth Shaw drove Jake into a corner and cracked him with lefts and rights prompting Callas to wave it off at :56.

Shaw raised his record to 12-0 (9) while Jake Jr. dropped to 8-3-1 (2).
In the opening bout, Nelson Perez, 135lbs, of Marlboro, MA, improved to 2-0 with as many kayos with a second round stoppage of Devon Grant, 140lbs, of New York, NY. Perez cracked Grant with a long right hand that crumpled him near the ropes in the second and the referee stopped counting and waved off the bout when it was clear Grant was out.

The bout was ruled a TKO at 2:04 of round 2. Grant remains without a win, now 0-2.

Last night at the Fox Theater in Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Uncasville, CT, New Haven, CT's Bad Chad Dawson returned to the ring after 27 months since losing to Andrezs Fonfara. Dawson struggled with rugged southpaw Quinton Rankin but scored a unanimous decision victory in the Main Event of the pro-am boxing card of more than six hours. In the professional co-feature The Mighty Midget, Tramaine Williams, also of New Haven, raised his unbeaten record to 18-0 defeating Neil Tabanao of the Philipines in a 10 round featherweight bout. More CT prize fighters saw action in five other bouts on the professional portion of the card and the night began with Promoter Jimmy Burchfield's Amateur Invitational, 8 amateur bouts held under the auspices of USA Boxing.

In the Main Event, <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">Chad Dawson, <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">178lbs., defeated <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">Quinton Rankin, 179lbs, of <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">Charlotte, N.C. by eight round unanimous decision. Dawson a three time 175 pound titlist showed flashes of his former self especially in the early going but Rankin was determined to play spoiler. The all-southpaw contest saw some clutching and grappling in the fourth when Rankin grabbed his way out of trouble in response to several blasts from Bad Chad and at one point both men slumped into the ropes in a tackle.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">In the fifth round Dawson was landing more often and heavier when Quinton Rankin caught him with an uppercut that sent him straight down into a crouch. Rankin fired a cuffing right at Dawson as he was down and then Referee Mike Ortega stepped in and did more meddling than officiating. He had ruled Dawson down, however there was never any eight count and the time Ortega took to warn Rankin for the shot he took at Dawson while he was on the deck seemed purposefully slow. The bout continued and Rankin looked to capitalize on his hurt opponent but he wasn't able to do it cleanly and he clipped Dawson with an elbow forcing Ref. Ortega to pause the action and penalize Rankin for the infraction.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; text-align: justify;">Over the next three rounds Dawson shook off the cobwebs and kept Rankin from getting so close again by keeping a right jab in his face and chest. When the decision came at the end of eight it was a lopsided one with scores of 80-68, and 78-72 x 2.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">than one at a time. Tabanao's well-timed offense made for some tangles of arms and elbows and Ref. Arthur Mercante Jr warned the featherweights for grappling on several occasions. If Tabanao couldn't get his fists to Williams head cleanly, at least by letting his own hands go he could prevent Williams <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">from landing cleanly. Tabanao had his best round in the sixth when Williams tired a bit but Midget came on strong in the tenth landing several big left hand bolts, his best shots of the fight. When the scorecards were read it was unanimous in favor of the Mighty Midget, two judges saw it 99-91 and the third had it 98-92.

Twitter recap here

Last night at the Turning Stone Events Center in Verona, NY, Cletus "The Hebrew Hammer" Seldin stopped Zab "Super" Judah in round eleven to become the NABA Super Lightweight Champ. Seldin staggered the 41 year old Brooklynite in round three and worked hard to walk down the still-clever former two division champion. Watching all the action was this year's International Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2019 inductees, in town for Sunday's induction ceremony in nearby Canastota.

Returning to the ring for the first time in sixteen months, Zab Judah, 138.25lbs, had moments when he looked like the Judah of a dozen years ago, jabbing well behind the southpaw jab and circling effectively in spots. But 32 year old power-puncher, Cletus Seldin, 138.25lbs, of Long Island, NY, hacked at Judah with both hands relentlessly, forcing him to clutch and grapple often. On the inside Judah would try to keep his head close to Seldin's cheek, preventing the Long Islander from getting room to land a clean power punch. Seldin was content to chop at Judah's waist, landing heavy body shots and banging him with chopping, ugly but effective shots in each round.

In the third Seldin connected with a heavy right that made Judah do an awkward stutter-step towards a neutral corner. The Hebrew Hammer rushed in to finish things as the bell sounded to end the round. In the fourth Judah used distance and movement to buy himself some time and prolong what turned out to be inevitable. Seldin's chopping shots wore on Judah and despite flashes of his past speed, and single shots landed to the head of Seldin, Judah probably didn't win more than two rounds in total.

In the eleventh, Seldin connected with his hammer of a right and Judah's legs went rubbery again. Seldin jumped on him, slamming him with follow-up blasts along the ropes and forcing Ref. Charlie Fitch to step in and call the fight at 1:40 of the penultimate round.

With the win, Seldin climbed to 24-1 (20) with the victory and Zab Judah fell to 44-10 (30).

In the co-featured bout of the night, the son of 2019 IBHOF Inductee James "Buddy" McGirt, James McGirt Jr, 159.5lbs of Vero Beach, FL, had to settle for a draw against David Papot, 156lbs, of Saint Nazaire, France. McGirt Jr. boxed well in the early going, using a jab to bloody the nose of the Frenchman. Papot did much of the pressing while McGirt tried to stymie him with straight punches. As the rounds wore on Papot became more effective but many of the rounds were close, with neither fighter able to stun or hurt the other. The most heated the action got was in the ninth where each boxer landed meaner shots and drew the crowd back into the fight.

At the end of twelve the judges scored it 117-111 for Papot, 115-113 for McGirt Jr and 114-114.

With the even bout, Papot's record goes to 22-0-1 (3) while McGirt's moves to 27-3-2 (14).

In the fight of the night and the biggest upset on the card, Lavisas Williams, 131.5lbs, of Rochester, NY defeated Mario Alfano, 131.5lbs, of Rome, Italy by unanimous decision. In the classic match-up of boxer versus puncher, Alfano played the role of aggressive, onrushing slugger while Williams fleshed out his part as the slick, clever boxer using distance and jabs to control his opponent. Alfano had a great first round and hurt Williams to the body along the ropes. But the second was a different story. Williams adjusted beautifully and slammed jabs into Alfano's face as he came forward and blunted his rushes with lateral movement. The third round was close but after that Williams dominated and rid himself of any cobwebs and negative mojo from having sat on the shelf since a February twenty-sixteen kayo loss on ShoBox. On this night, Williams would not be denied his opportunity to shine in front of alumni of the IBHOF like Michael Spinks, Sugar Shane Mosley and Erik Morales and more, all watching from ringside.

At the end of 12 the judges saw it 78-74 x 2 and 77-75 all in favor of Rochester's Red Williams who improved to 9-1-1 (3) while Alfano sank to 13-1-1 (3).

The son of another IBHOF inductee, Alcibiade Duran Galvan aka Roberto Duran Jr, 147lbs, of Plantation, FL scrapped with Jonathan Pierre, 146lbs, of Vero Beach, FL. At the end of 4, the judges saw it 39-37 for Pierre, overruled by two scores of 39-37 for Duran Jr.

The offspring of Manos De Piedra picked up his third victory in as many fights, now 3-0 (2) while Jonathan Pierre lost for the first time, leaving Verona at 3-1.

Wendy Toussaint, 152.5lbs, of Huntington, NY defeated Lucius Johnson, 160lbs, of Compton, CA by unanimous decision. Toussaint boxed well over the six round distance but Johnson was durable and determined to last the distance. When the scorecards were read they were unanimous, 60-54 x 3, in favor of Toussaint.

In victory, Toussaint rose to 10-0 (4) while Johnson dropped to 4-6-1 (3).

In an all-New York clash, undefeated cruiserweight Alex "Lights Out" Vanasse, 190lbs, of Carmel, NY, met Eric "Caution" Abraham, 191.5lbs, of Schenectady, NY. Both guys were throwing shots that meant business from the start. Abraham's shots seemed more educated but Vanasse was more aggressive and awkward. But in the third Abraham connected with a big blast and sent Vanasse to the canvas. He got up and ref. Benjy Esteves allowed the fight to continue and it did for about ten more seconds. Abraham charged Vanasse and smashed him with two huge rights that put him down and out. Ref. Esteves waved off the fight at 1:52 of the 3rd.

Alex Vanasse looked alert as he left on a stretcher, now at 4-1 (4) while Eric Abraham climbed to 6-4 (3) with the victory.

In the opening fight of the night, Boubacar Sylla, 146.5lbs, of Cincinnati, OH defeated Marquis Hawthorne, 145lbs, of Waco, TX by an unpopular unanimous decision. Scores were 58-56 x 2 and 59-55.

Sylla improved to 10-0 (7) while Hawthorne dropped to 7-11 (1).
