On Saturday night the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun Casino was the site of the first ever professional boxing card by Marilyn Rosa's Boss Lady Promotions of New Haven, CT. The six bout card was a family affair, featuring Luis KO King Rosa, her son, in the Main Event, trained by Luis Rosa Sr., her husband, and with members of their Boxing In Faith Gym on New Haven's Grand Avenue filling out the bulk of the bouts on the card. In the Main, the KO King delivered exactly what his nickname promises with a 2 round stoppage of Sonora, Mexico's Ernesto Guerrero.

Luis Rosa 125 1/4lbs, of New Haven, came out blasting at Ernesto Guerrero, 121lbs, of Sonora,
Mexico. Punishing Guerrero to both the head and body, Rosa had his opponent covering up and on the retreat immediately. Hurting Guerrero in the first, Rosa closed the show in the second, dropping Guerrero once and then again when he was allowed to continue. The official time of the stoppage was 1:14 of round number 2 and with the victory Rosa climbs to 19-0 (9) while Guerrero dropped to 17-16(11) after losing his eighth straight, five by way of the knockout.

Edwin Soto, 149 1/4lbs, battled Shakha Moore, 151lbs, in an all-New Haven 6-round regional skirmish. Soto dominated the dogged Moore with straight punches, switching
Shakha Moore (L) & Edwin Soto (R)
from southpaw back to orthodox to keep Moore guessing where the punches were coming from. Soto may have had slightly more success with the right jab and right hook but to this observer he seemed close to ambidextrous. Moore best moments came when the fighters got close and he was able to make Soto pay for letting him inside. For his efforts Moore won just one round on one of the three judges scorecards denying Soto a shut-out. The cards were 60-54 twice and 59-55 all for Edwin Soto who improved to 10-2-2 (4) while Shakha Moore dropped to 11-21-3 (2).

The best bout of the night was fought between 140 3/4lbs, Evincii Dixon of Lancaster PA and 139 1/2lbs Jair Ramos of Waterbury, CT. Dixon came to Connecticut to win and started fast, opening up with both hands and scoring a knockdown in round number one. Ramos got up and gathered himself and fought back well in round two, countering Dixon with his back along the ropes.
When the decision comes one judge did see it in favor of Ramos at 38-37 but was overruled by scores of 40-35 and 39-36. A rematch between these two men would likely be worth a look.
For now Dixon rose to 5-5-1 (2) and Ramos dipped to 3-2-1 (2).

In the first bout of the night, 134 pound, William Foster Jr of New Haven made a successful pro debut against 134 1/2 pound Oscar Diaz of Hartford. Foster went right after Diaz in the first, pelting him with shots to the head and body. Diaz showed the look of a gym-fighter, content to score and then smile, making his opponent acknowledge the blow. But Foster remained focused and busy even during a fourth that saw Diaz connect with his best punches of the fight. When the scorecards were read the decision was unanimous, a shut-out for Foster by 3 scores of 40-36 making him 1-0 as a prizefighter. The sturdy and spirited Oscar Diaz dropped to 0-7.

Nate Green (R) goes after Manuel Galaviz
Nate Green, 120lbs of New Haven, CT blitzed Manuel Galaviz, 117lbs of Sonora, Mexico, stopping him in the opening frame of a four-rounder. Galaviz has Marilyn Monroe's face tattooed at his waistline and again and again Green rammed a short right into Marilyn's mouth, force-feeding her tattooed likeness cheap leather. Galaviz was down and out in the first leaving him at 8-16 (4) while Green rose to 7-0 (2).

Alberto Candelaria, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, 140 1/4lbs, blasted the debuting Jose Sanchez, of Woburn MA, dropping him twice in the first and forcing to quit in his corner before round two. Both men started fast and were slugging from the bell but Candelaria quickly got the better of things. With the win, Candelaria improved to 4-2-1 (3) while Sanchez backed into the pros at 0-1.
