On this day in fistiana...
Sergio Martinez vs. Kermit Cintron
February 14, 2009
On this day in fistiana in Sunrise, Florida Sergio Martinez knocks out Kermit Cintron at the end of round seven when he is counted out by referee Frank Santore Jr. Cintron begins complaining and an indecisive ref undoes his own call and the bout is allowed to continue. Of the HBO crew only Harold Lederman calls it like it happened, the others don't seem to realize the referee counted ten, and with
his arm signaled the fight was done. That means it's over. But Ref Santore caved to Cintron's whining, undid his own call and allowed the fight to continue. Then he took a crucial point from Martinez in the final round for hitting behind the head or maybe more to even out the knockdown he probably felt he got wrong in the seventh. Whatever. They go to the scorecards, Sergio should be comfortably ahead, the point deduction probably won't matter HBO's Max Kellerman says. BUT...Only Tommy Kaczmarek has a reasonable card, scoring it 116-110 for Sergio Martinez, but he is overruled by two cards of 113-113 from the other two bozos.
Oh bitterest of Valentines, Martinez settles for a draw after having a kayo win undone just twenty minutes earlier.
