On this day in fistiana...
Joe Frazier vs. Jimmy Ellis
February 16, 1970
On this day in fistiana, Smokin' Joe
Frazier demolished Jimmy Ellis at Madison Square Garden, in what many consider
one of his finest appearances. Joe Frazier's storied-left hook is the highlight
of this fight which was for the Best-Of-The-Best at Heavyweight not named
Muhammad Ali, as the Champion was unable to defend the lineal championship
while in exile after his refusal to be inducted into the US Armed Forces.
Frazier proved here he was certainly far
more than just the Champion-Of-Everyone-Else in systematically breaking down the
Angelo Dundee trained stylist Jimmy Ellis in what turned out to be a partial
harbinger of things to come when Frazier was to meet a reunited Dundee & Ali in
this same building.
