When Math Goes Bad, Folks Get Mad at Twin River as Gingras-Biosse Ends in Majority Draw

Last night at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island, it looked as though Rich Gingras won an eight round majority decision over Vladine Biosse, capturing Biosse’s New England Super Middleweight Title in a bit of an upset. But in less than five minutes, the ring announcer was back at the microphone explaining to the crowd, that was now in the midst of departure, that there had been a scoring error on one of the three official scorecards and the majority win they had just seen was actually meant to be a majority draw. Needless to say, the throng of Rich Gingras supporters, decked out in red t-shirts emblazoned with their fighter’s name, were not at all pleased and several shouting matches broke out between Biosse and Gingras fans still filing out of the arena and continued on the sidewalk outside the venue. The bout had been a close, heated one, and if not for the addition error and the amended decision, it’s likely a draw would have been far more palatable if it hadn’t come as an after-thought which appeared to set the stage for a potential rematch between the two regional favorites.

This day in fistiana was one of the weirder moments in heavyweight boxing history. If you’re of Polish descent Andrew Golota is the heartbreak and frustration of Billy Buckner, Ben Johnson, and Steve Bartman all rolled into one.  

Despite being the WBO Titlist, Riddick Bowe was hoping to get a fight with Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson, and Andrew Golota was not expected to be much more than a tune-up fight. But Bowe, always one to struggle with conditioning, was not in peak physical shape and from the descriptions given on-air by Lampley & Merchant, he didn't seem focused on Golota in the least.

He would pay for it. Through 2 rounds it was clear Golota would be a force to be reckoned with and things might get weird—halfway through round one he lands a heavy overhand right and only halfway through the second he lands a barrage below the belt and gets the first warning from Referee Wayne Kelly. And right at the bell to end the second, Bowe almost pays Kelly back with a big right-hand hay-maker that just misses the Ref.'s noggin.

Boxing is more spectacle than sport; it is legalized assault as well as being a highly competitive contact sport and it occupies a different niche than team sports and even other individual contests. But all observers would agree there is a general aesthetic that is expected or hoped for when two combatants clash. And most observers would find the co-featured attraction of Billy Dib versus Mike Oliver, which became the Main Event just hours before show time, something less than aesthetically pleasing. This of course poses a problem for a promoter like Curtis 50 Cent

On Saturday night at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT, Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin made short work of Matthew “Mack-The-Knife” Macklin, stopping him at 1:22 of round three with a brutal left-hook to the body. The suddenness and severity of the victory sent a shockwave through the sport, heralding a new star, and solidifying his claim to dominance at one hundred sixty pounds.

From the opening bell, one hundred fifty-nine pound, Gennady Golovkin, of Kazakhstan via Stuttgart, Germany, was able to hurt Matthew Macklin, of Birmingham, UK, with just about every punch he landed. In round one, referee Eddie Cotton missed a knockdown Golovkin earned off a right hand blast which sent Macklin reeling back into the ropes which kept him on his feet. Golovkin’s assault was unrelenting and Macklin, also 159lbs, expected to be a test for the Kazakh, was overwhelmed from the start and facing a foe that would simply not be denied.

Although the power of Golovkin was clearly on display in the win, it was also the accuracy and preciseness of his offense that should not go unnoticed. Afterwards promoter Lou DiBella said Triple G’s kayo blow was right up there with the greatest body shot he ever saw live—the blow Roy Jones landed on the ribs of Virgil Hill that ended their 1998 contest. At the post-fight press conference, DiBella wondered aloud if this body-shot kayo win was not even better than that of Roy Jones. 

In defending his WBA & IBO 160 pound titles Golovkin proved definitively he is the force to be reckoned within the division, especially considering the fact the undisputed champion, Sergio Martinez is on the shelf until well into 2014.
