On this day in fistiana...
Marlon Starling vs. Lloyd Honeyghan
February 4, 1989
On February 4th, 1984 Hartford, CT's Marlon Magic Man Starling lost a 15 round unanimous decision to welterweight champion Donald Cobra Curry. It was a rematch of the 1982 championship bout which Starling lost via split decision, a fight a lot of observers thought he won. In the rematch however, Starling was beaten more convincingly and he would be forced to get back in line for another shot at the world's welterweight title. Ironically, that shot would come against the conqueror of Donald Curry, Britain's Lloyd Honeyghan, and again on the very same day, February 4th, this time in 1989. Marlon Starling challenged the Undisputed Linear Welterweight Champion and in what is one of his career best performances, the Magic Man used his stylistic defense and clever boxing to upset, outclass and stop Lloyd Honeyghan to win the Championship.
