Joe Louis vs. John Henry Lewis

On this day in fistiana, Joe Louis defended his Heavyweight Championship against his friend John Henry Lewis at Madison Square Garden. Joe Louis finished off John Henry in less than a round, marking the historic first occasion on American soil in which two black men met for the Heavyweight Championship. Jack Johnson had defended his title versus African-American heavyweight Battling Jim Johnson but that bout was held in Paris (Dec. 19, 1913).
