DiBella Entertainment's Broadway Boxing series returned to the Connecticut woods tonight with an eight bout card from the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT. 

In the Main Event Matt Remillard, 135lbs, of Manchester, CT scored a stoppage victory over Fatiou Fassinou, 133lbs, of Cotonou, Benin in less than five rounds. Remillard maintained consistent

pressure, especially to the mid-section of his speedy and awkward southpaw opponent throughout four weird and sometimes ugly rounds. Fassinou fled more than fought and often, when not moving in quick circles, threw himself at Remillard grabbing around his waist or hooking one of his arms in hopes of stopping Remillard's offense. But Remillard was relentless in his pressure and Fassinou went to the canvas more from wilting than the result of an individual blow at the end of the second. The count continued past the bell so Remillard had no chance to follow-up. The third saw more of Remillard landing well to the body, likely the easiest target to hit on the herky-jerky wild movements of Fassinou. At the end of the third Fassinou's chief second actually went out to ring center to retrieve his exhausted fighter and guide him back to the corner. There was little doubt Fassinou's

gazelle impression was starting to crumple under the Remillard assault. The fourth saw Ref Johnny Callas sternly warning Fassinou about the repeated holding he kept doing. Remillard scored often in the fourth, ripping Fassinou with mean left-hookercuts to the chest and belly. In the corner before round five Fassinou's handlers decided to call it quits giving Remillard his first stoppage victory in his 2 bout comeback since his March of twenty-eleven defeat to Mikey Garcia.

Matt "Sharp Shooter" Remillard improves to 25-1 (14) and hopes with one more fight this year he'll be back in line for a rematch with Garcia. Fatiou Fassinou falls to 27-6-3 (14).


In the night's co-featured bout, undefeated heavyweights Ruslan Shamalov, 233lbs, of Brooklyn, NY by way of Russia and George Arias, 230lbs, of Bronx, NY by way of Dominican Republic, went to war in a bout where someone's O had to go. Starting fast, George Arias attacked the ribs of Shamalov in the first but was quickly driven back to the ropes. There he worked successfully quite often, cracking Shamalov with a hard right or a left and then slipping out and around Shamalov, keeping him turning. Ruslan Shamalov's style was cruder but he made up for it with his size and strength, thumping Arias with hooks to the belly and sometimes partial hammer-fists to the side of the head. But it was Arias landing the better scoring blows throughout a bout filled with crowd pleasing exchanges between strong heavies. At the end of six rounds the judges saw it a little differently but all in favor of the speedier George Arias. The scores were 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56 all for George Arias, now 7-0 (3). Ruslan Shamalov fell to 4-1 (3).


Myquan Williams, 146lbs, of East Hartford, CT, won a lop-sided unanimous decision over Ariel Vasquez, 147lbs, of Managua, Nicaragua. Williams blasted away at the Nicaraguan southpaw throughout this six rounder, belting him with straight rights and left hooks. Vasquez ate lots of leather but was never down or even hurt save for a moment at the end of the second where he seemed to hesitate a moment after absorbing a hard shot to the head. Williams jumped right on him hoping to follow up but the bell to end the round rang. Williams never tired over the six round distance but he did do some clowning when it was possible a stepped-up body attack may have helped score him a knockdown or a stoppage. No matter. He controlled the action and looked sharp. At the end of six the judges saw it 60-54 x 3 all in favor of Williams.

Williams improved to 7-0 (4) while Vasquez dropped to 13-18-2 (9). 

Jennifer "The Bolivian Queen" Salinas 135lbs, of Providence, RI defeated Marquita Lee, 132lbs, of Novato, CA, by six round unanimous decision in an exciting scrap. Salinas landed a wide but overhand right repeatedly, causing swelling under the eye of Marquita Lee. Salinas was the aggressor throughout the fight and in the fifth both women stood at ring center and slugged without pause, thrilling the crowd and testing each other's stamina. But in the sixth, Salinas was able to summon the energy to win the final round by a wide margin, blasting away at Lee with both hands in the final thirty seconds. When the scorecards are read they are unanimous, 59-55 x 2 and 58-56, all for Salinas who improved to 20-4 (5), while Lee fell to 3-5.


Khiry Todd, 149lbs, of Lynn, MA overwhelmed Nicolas Sarouna, 148lbs, of Lome, Togo, dominating the first two rounds before stopping him half way through the third round. Todd switched back and forth from orthodox to southpaw, controlling the action throughout and landing with heavy blasts with both hands. In the third, with Todd landing repeatedly, Sarouna seemed to purposefully take a knee, perhaps to collect himself but Referee Johnny Callas picked up the count and got all the way to ten before Sarouna decided to stand up. It was a little odd but there was no doubt he was being swarmed. With the win Todd rises to 5-0 (5) while Sarouna falls to 12-9-1 (9). 

Radzhab Butaev, 153lbs, of Brooklyn, NY by way of Russia, shocked Abraham Alvarez, 157lbs, of El Rosario, Mexico, stopping him in one after two painful looking knockdowns. Soon after the

opening bell, Butaev sprung at Alvarez behind a left hook that put Alvarez down hard. He rose from the knockdown and was allowed to continue but was quickly overwhelmed by Butaev who sensed the end was near. Having gone to the head repeatedly with big shots, Butaev changed things up and slammed a right into the side of Alvarez that made him grimace and fold up into a ball on the canvas. Referee Joey Lupino halted the action at 1:05 of round 1. Butaev is one aggressive middleweight this observer would like to see again.

In victory, Butaev raised his record to 6-0 (5) while Alvarez dropped to 20-11-1 (11). 

Undefeated cruiserweight Luis Garcia, 194lbs, of Peekskill, NY by way of Cuba, scored a stoppage victory of Felipe Romero, 195lbs, of San Diego, CA by way of Mexico. Garcia went right after Romero at the opening bell and scored a knockdown within the first minute. Romero was allowed to continue but it was just a matter of time before Garcia hammered him with several uppercuts, driving him back along the ropes where Ref. Jonny Callas stepped in to halt the action. It goes into the books as a TKO 1, 1:48. Garcia raises his record to 15-0 (12) while Romero's drops to 19-14-1 (13). 


In the first bout of the night, Jose Roman, 149lbs, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, defeated William Hill, 148lbs, of Detroit, MI. After four rounds the official judges saw the fight in Roman's favor by scores of 39-37 and 40-36 x 2.

Roman improved to 4-0 (3) while Hill fell to 2-3.

Opening up the televised card, WBC International Light Heavyweight Champion Joe Smith, Jr. (23-1, 19 KOs) will return West from Long Island to put his belt on the line against the Miami-based Sullivan Barrera (19-1, 14 KOs) in a battle of heavy-handed sluggers.

On Saturday, June 3, DiBella Entertainment will return to the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, CT, for the latest exciting installment of its popular Broadway Boxing series, presented by Nissan of Queens, Azad Watches, OPTYX, and Christos Steak House. The card will feature a bevy of New England talent, including fan favorite Shelly "Shelito's Way" Vincent in an eight-round special attraction featherweight bout, as well as lightweight Matt Remillard on the comeback and welterweight prospect Mykquan Williams on the rise.

"I am happy to bring another great card back to Foxwoods, which continues to be a terrific venue for Broadway Boxing," said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. "Fans will not want to miss the always-entertaining Shelly Vincent, who is a great ambassador for women's boxing. The stacked undercard will include local New England favorites Matt Remillard, Mykquan Williams, Jonathan Figueroa, and Khiry Todd, as well as Russian future world champion Radzhab Butaev and a battle between unbeaten heavyweight prospects Ruslan Shamalov and George Arias."

One of the most popular fighters out of the New England area, Shelly "Shelito's Way" Vincent (19-1, 1 KO), born in New London, CT, but now residing in Providence, RI, will compete at Foxwoods for the seventh time, in an eight-round featherweight bout. Last August, Vincent entered enemy territory to challenge rival Heather Hardy in her adversary's hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Their highly publicized grudge match was nationally televised by NBC Sports Net and was hailed by Ring Magazine as the "Female Fight of the Year" for 2016. Vincent was also honored by the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame as their "Fighter of the Year" for 2016, becoming the first female recipient of the award. She rebounded from her only defeat with a unanimous decision victory on December 2, back home in Rhode Island. Before turning pro in October 2011, Vincent was a Connecticut State, Connecticut Golden Gloves, and National Golden Gloves champion as an amateur. Managed by Mike Criscio and trained by Peter Manfredo Sr., Vincent signed with DiBella Entertainment in 2016.

Matt "Sharp Shooter" Remillard (24-1, 13 KOs), of Hartford, CT, will continue his comeback, following a six-year ring absence, in an eight-round lightweight bout. It will be his first fight in his home state since November 2010. A pro since 2005, Remillard is a former WBC Youth, WBC-USNBC, NABF and NABO featherweight champion. His only loss came in March 2011 to the unbeaten Mikey Garcia, now the WBC world lightweight champion. He is trained by Paul Cichon, a local legend and community leader, out of Manchester Ring of Champions Society boxing gym. As an amateur, Remillard accumulated a record of 115-25, and was a two-time Everlast Under-19 National amateur champion.

Highly touted East Hartford welterweight prospect Mykquan Williams (6-0, 4 KOs) has kept a busy pace since turning pro last April. Promoted by DiBella Entertainment and managed by Jackie Kallen, the 19-year-old Williams will return to Foxwoods, where he has built a strong following, for the sixth time, in his first scheduled six-rounder. Williams is also trained by Cichon, whom he's known since he was a child and looks upon as a surrogate father. His biological father was murdered when Mykquan was just a week old. Williams was a decorated amateur with a 45-13 record, highlighted by three gold-medal performances at the Ringside World Championships, in addition to winning the PAL Tournament and Silver Gloves Championships.

"FIGHTNIGHT LIVE" ON FACEBOOK OPENS WITH KNOCKOUT NUMBERS

Boxing, MMA streaming series debut draws 40,000 views, and still climbing.

The reviews are in, and the numbers are in, and the decision is unanimous: the debut of FIGHTNIGHT LIVE, on Facebook Live Thursday evening from Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, was a KO victory.

 

Watchers of the stream, which drew 37,000-plus "uniques" on fight night, and continues to draw clicks, enjoyed a Star Boxing® main event topped by a junior middleweight scrap between vet Delvin Rodriguez and up 'n comer Courtney Pennington.

 

More numbers: Almost 3,000 comments were shared by watchers during the four plus hour show, which provided incredible value for fans of the sweet science. Fans said things like, "This is the future of the sport, live FREE streaming." "This stream is giving expose to young guns that would not ordinarily get it on broadcast TV!" "After tonight's streaming many will talk about it and many more will watch if there's a next time, this is the bomb!"

 

"I was inundated with complimentary texts, emails and calls almost as soon as the stream started, and it was a lot of fun watching the numbers swell from 27 views at the start of the broadcast to 40,000-plus by now," said Mark Fratto, Principal of Linacre Media. "Like many others, we believe that the present and future of 'televised' boxing, MMA, Muay Thai and really all live sports is digital. Further, by putting these events on Facebook we're providing an interactive environment for fight fans to not only view the events, but to connect with each other and provide their own real-time commentary during the bouts. We believe in high-quality, cost-efficient production that can give fans free access to hundreds of global, national and regional live fight nights without breaking the bank of the promoter and also without sacrificing what sports fans have come to expect from their viewing experience - multiple camera angles, graphics, replays and behind-the-scenes access and interviews. Promoter Joe DeGuardia went on air during the main event. He was visibly impressed and shared his enthusiasm while watching Pennington spring the upset.

 

"This has been incredible," DeGuardia said. "It is great that fans will now be able to see more fights on a platform with massive reach. This is good for everyone and a perfect way for fighters to expand their fan base. I am pleased to be involved."

Bout 3, Marcus Beckford,155 lbs, East Meadow, NY, 3-6-3 vs Jose Rivera,154 1/4 lbs, of Hartford, CT, 2-1 (2)  6 rounds.

tentative first between these two fighters. Rivera seemed busier. They are using mats in the corner to absorb excess water. Great idea!!

Rated-R Rivera landed several cracking right hooks in this all-southpaw contest.

these two are being a little extra cautious. They probably don't face southpaws like themselves very often. This is like looking in a mirror

Beckford landed a couple single shots in that third but it was Rivera landing big blasts to the head with both hands at round's end

holy crap!! Beckford looked to be doing a little talking in there & seconds later Rivera crashed a right hook against his jaw & ended this

Ref. Ortega gave him a count but halted things with Beckford on his feet but too groggy to go on.

Rivera wins via TKO Round 4 1:50. Wow. Big shot!

From the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT...

Bout 1-

Richard Rivera, 177 1/2 lbs, of Hartford, CT, defeated Marco Parente, 179 3/4 lbs, of Toronto, Canada in the first bout of the night. Starting fast, Rivera who goes by the nickname Popeye, charged out of the ring in a style more reminiscent Bluto. Parente met his rugged violence but Rivera asserted himself quickly, finding the range on single power blasts with the right hand to both the ribs and head of Parente. Both fighters looked tired in the third but Rivera continued applying pressure. In the fourth and final frame, Rivera was relentless in pursuing Parente, bringing cheers out of the crowd with every blast he landed. With just 31 seconds to go and Popeye boring in, banging the head and body of a fleeing and increasingly non-violent Parente, referee Danny Schiavone stepped in to halt the action. The winner by TKO at 2:27 of round 4 is Richard "Popeye the Sailor Man" Rivera. 

Richard Rivera improves to 2-0 (2) while Parente backs his way into the pro ranks at 0-1.

Bout 2-

In a duel of debuting pros, Omar Bordoy ,135 3/4 lbs, of Danbury, CT, defeated Jonathon Rojas, 133 1/2 lbs, of Jersey City, NJ, by four round unanimous decision. Bordoy showed superior hand speed and skills to his older but equally untested opponent. Bordoy landed double left hooks and quick overhand rights throughout the fight keeping the tenacious Rojas on the defensive. There was an especially heartfelt embrace and mutual congratulations between the fighters at the final bell. No doubt they both tried hard to win in a spirited contest. The scorecards were 40-36 x 3 all in favor of Omar Bordoy.

Bordoy is now a professional at 1-0 and Rojas is 0-1.

Bout 3-

Jose Rivera,154 1/4 lbs, of Hartford, CT, stopped Marcus Beckford,155 lbs, East Meadow, NY,  in a duel of southpaws. Both fighters were tentative in letting their hands go in round one, gauging the distance on a southpaw foe like themselves. In the second both fighters started landing heavier single shots with Rivera's punches, especially the right hook, finding their mark more frequently. In the fourth, just as Beckford seemed to be talking to his opponent, Rivera fired a bone-crunching right hook to his jaw. Beckford seemed to hang suspended for a beat as the crowd gasped before falling back to the canvas. Referee Mike Ortega gave him the mandatory 8 count and Beckford did pull himself to his feet but Ortega deemed him too hurt to continue. The fight was waved off at 1:50 of round 4.

Jose "Rated R" Rivera improves to 3-1 (3) while Marcus Beckford drops to 3-7-3

Bout 4-

Anthony Laureano, 138 3/4 lbs, of East Hartford, CT, prevailed over Sidney Maccow,140 3/4 lbs, of New York, NY,  4-5 (3) by 6 round unanimous decision. Starting quickly, Sidney Maccow got out in front of a slow-starting Laureano, winning rounds 1 & 2. Halfway through the third round, Laureano seemed to wake up and started throwing big punches, especially to the rib cage of Maccow. Over the next three rounds the geography of the fight changed entirely, with Laureano staying in close and forcing Maccow to banging at a distance that was not to his advantage. In the final round Laureano landed heavily with both hands, thrilling the assembled which had come out in force to support him. When the scorecards were read they were all 58-56 all in favor of Laureano.

Laureano improves his record to 4-0 (2) while Maccow drops to 4-6 (3). 

Bout 5-

Kali Reis, 151 1/4 lbs, of Providence, RI, outpointed Ashleigh Curry, 152 1/2 lbs, of Saint Joseph, MO, over six rounds. Despite the awkwardness of fighting a southpaw, Kali Reis was able to keep Ashleigh Curry on the retreat for much of the contest. Curry was able to exploit her size advantage in close but Reis made adjustments by increasing her shots to Curry's body. In the final round Reis was able to land several heavy jolting shots on Curry which got her clowning a bit in defiance but clowning doesn't score points. Although it was ugly, this observer thought it was Reis who dominated with the more accurate punches even in rounds where there were very few clean punches landed by either fighter to choose from. The judges saw it closer. At the end of six the scorecards read 57-57 from one official, overruled by two cards in favor of Reis at 59-55 and 58-56. 

Kali Reis rose to 11-6-1 (4) with the Majority Decision victory while Ashleigh Curry fell to 7-11-4 (1). 

Bout 6-

Daniel Gonzalez, 145 1/2 lbs, of Woodhaven, NY, won a lopsided unanimous decision over Samuel Amoako,147 lbs, of Accra, Ghana. Gonzalez swarmed Amoako from the start, boxing in and out behind speedy flurries to the head and ribcage of the Ghanaian veteran. Again and again, Gonzalez drove Amoako to the ropes and battered him with quick accurate punches. As the rounds wore on the crowd became frustrated with the monotony of the one-sided bout as Amoako used his defense and elusiveness to keep Gonzalez from breaking him down. Afterwards, Gonzalez said he thought he could have stopped Amoako had the bout been scheduled for 8 rounds instead of 6. No matter. After six the officials were in agreement, all three seeing it 60-54 in favor of Gonzalez.

Danny Gonzalez rose to 14-0-1 (5) while Samuel Amoako dropped to 21-15 (15).

Main Event-

Courtney Pennington, of Brooklyn, NY, 154 1/4 lbs, defeated Delvin Rodriguez,156 1/4 lbs, of Danbury, CT, by lopsided 10 round unanimous decision. Rodriguez was never able to overcome the speedy hands and footwork of Kingpin Pennington despite a consistent effort from the veteran. Pennington blasted Rodriguez with jabs to the mouth and face, swelling his eye and reddening his brow. Rodriguez pursued Pennington relentlessly but he missed often, bedeviled by the always moving and turning Pennington. By the fifth both fighters had swelling around their eyes. Pennington's thickening left eyelid was the result of D-Rod's single right hand blasts that scored occasionally, and on Rodriguez a reddish hematoma grew larger under his right eye from all of the Kingpin's pelting jabs. Rodriguez tried to rally in the final round and a half but Pennington was just too elusive for him and made him miss often. When the bell sounded to end the tenth, Rodriguez held his hands aloft but there was little applause. When the scorecards were read it was unanimous, the officials saw it 98-92 x 2 and 97-93 all in favor of Pennington.

Rodriguez slips to 29-9-4 (16). While Courtney Pennington rises to 11-4-1 (5) and has now won three in a row since his April of twenty-sixteen defeat to Patrick Day.
