Shelito Vincent notches a victory

DiBella Entertainment's Broadway Boxing returned to Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Uncasville, CT tonight with a six bout card, co-featuring Myquan Williams, the 140 pound prospect, and veteran featherweight female, Shelito Vincent in separate 8 round bouts.
Mykquan Williams 140lbs, of East Hartford, CT defeated Matt Doherty 138lbs of Salem, MA by 8 round unanimous decision. Williams dropped Doherty twice in the opening round, the first time with a sizzling left hook that Doherty never saw coming which sat him down hard. And the second was a similar shot that made him fall forward, touching the canvas with both gloves. Doherty collected himself in round two and started landing chopping shots of his own. Williams remained in control with speedy combinations but after getting over the first round shock of Williams punches, Doherty became able to withstand even harder shots as the rounds went on. This was the 20 year old, Williams first time fighting eight rounds and his first time spending more than 3 minutes at the office in his last three fights, all of which ended by first round kayo. Doherty refused to be number four and kept trying despite absorbing lots of leather from Marvelous Mykquan. By round four there was some redness around the right eye of Williams where Doherty was catching him with lefts. At the end of round 5, Williams mocked Doherty, sticking his tongue out and grinning, frustrated Doherty was still refusing to go quietly. Williams cracked Doherty with two and three punch combinations repeatedly but was never again able to put him down or hurt him. Although warned several times by referee Shada Murdaugh the back and forth trash-talking lasted right till after the final bell when there was no traditional sportsmanlike embrace between the combatants. But Williams remained poised, patient and following a plan to victory over the distance with a durable, never-quit, 29 year old in front of him. Not a bad learning experience. The scorecards were 77-73 and 80-70 x 2 all in favor of Mykquan Williams.
Shelly Vincent 126lbs of Providence, RI squeaked past Calixta Silgado 124lbs of Tolu, Colombia by 8 round Majority Decision. In a rematch of an October Broadway Boxing clash in the same Fox Theater ring, Silgado and Vincent fell back into the similar roles of boxer versus puncher. Vincent pressed forward and Silgado thumped at her with both hands as she advanced. After a slow first, Vincent made the fight in the second, pressing Silgado back and banging at her head and body with both hands. In the final 30 seconds of the second, Silgado jammed a right uppercut up into Vincent's chin that got her attention. In the third, Vincent complained to ref. Danny Schiavone about Silgado using her elbows on Vincent as she bulled her way inside. Schiavoine warned Silgado for the elbows and Vincent for complaining and told them both to keep fighting. On this night Vincent's usual head movement on the way in and speedy flurries once inside were infrequent if not altogether absent. Whether due to Silgado's chopping counters or the fading reflexes in a now 39 year old Vincent was unclear. As the rounds wore on this observer saw Silgado landing more effectively over the eight round distance but the officials disagreed. The official scorecards were 76-76 by Don Trella overruled by scores of 78-74 in favor of Vincent by judges Steve Weisfeld and Robert Paolino.
Vincent improved to 23-1 (1) while Silgado fell to 16-10-3 (11). Addressing the crowd after the decision was read, Vincent talked over the boos and said she hoped for the rematch with Heather Hardy she was promised three years ago.
In a battle of unbeaten fighters, Hurshidbek Normatov 151lbs of Uzbekistan via Brooklyn, NY knocked out Alexis Gaytan 155lbs of Mission, TX in the most compelling fight of the night. Normatov, a decorated amateur, used quick-feet and sharp, speedy combinations to pepper Gaytan with 2-4 punch barrages before circling, quickly out of range only to do it again. But in the first, the strong and determined Gaytan caught Normatov with a counter right that stunned him. In the second round a clash of heads opened a horrible gash over the right eye of Gaytan. Normatov opens up with both hands when the fight resumes and by round's end Gaytan's face was awash in scarlet.
Gaytan remained clear-headed and determined in the corner as his team did an excellent job preventing what looked like a bad cut from becoming a factor. In the fourth, Gaytan tilted things back in his favor when he drove Normatov to the ropes with body shots and the Uzbek sort of sagged down and half-sat on them prompting Ref. Sharda Murdaugh to call it a knockdown. Normatov is up on his toes and boxing again in the fifth, landing frequently but expending lots of energy while Gaytan's well-timed body-shots are keeping the fight competitive. In the sixth and final round, as Gaytan pressed forward and ducked under a wide left from Normatov, he popped up to throw a hook but Normatov's follow-up right hook was already on the way and it crashed against the chin of Gaytan and turned his lights out. The Texan seemed to hang there a split second, before falling forward onto his face. The fight was stopped immediately at :41 of the 6th round.

Adrian Sosa 141lbs of Larence, MA stopped Darnell Pettis 137lbs of Cleveland, OH at 1:24 of the second round. The 23 year old Sosa uses the traditional cross-armed defense and quick, heavy counter punches to batter Pettis for nearly 4 and a half minutes. Pettis came to fight but Sosa was able to use Pettis' aggression aginst him, walking him right into hard counters. Pettis never hit the deck but he was badly staggered on legs of rubber in both rounds before a series of heavy unanswered blasts from Sosa forced Ref. Danny Schiavone step in and wave off the action.
Sosa remains unbeaten, now 8-0 (6) while Pettis goes to 3-10.

Oscar Bonilla 138lbs of Bridgeport, CT defeated Seifullah "Jihad" Wise 140lbs of Philadelphia, PA. Both fighters charged out into an exchange for the first minute of the first, then seemed to steady themselves, picking their shots. The first was close with Bonilla fighting aggressively but Wise standing up to it and countering. In the second that changed. About a minute into the round Bonilla blasted Wise with a left hook to the jaw that forced him to go non-violent along the ropes. Bonnilla opened up with both hands and Wise just tried to cover up with limited success until Ref. Shada Murdaugh stepped in to halt the punishment at 1:20 of round 2.
Bonnilla raised his record to 5-3-2 (1) while Wise dropped to 3-5 (1).
Lennox Allen 171lbs, of Brooklyn, NY stopped Willis Lockett 173lbs of Tacoma Park, MD in the opening bout of the night. Allen put Lockett down in round one and again in the final seconds of the third. Ref. Danny Schiavone stopped the contest at 3:00 of round 3.
Allen moves his record up to 21-0-1 (14) while Lockett falls to 16-24-6 (5)

Fighting now in Bout 1, light heavyweights Lennox
Allen 171lbs of NYC versus Willis Lockett 173lbs of Tacoma
Park , MD
southpaw Lennox Allen in charge through 3. Lockett down but
not hurt in round one. Down again just now off a looping right hook, high on
the head. Allen followed it with a hook to the body that sent Lockett down but
it was the temple-shot that did the damage. TKO 3 for Allen

Up now in Bout 2, super lightweight Oscar Bonilla
138lbs of Bridgeport , CT
wow, this has broken into a fight, right quick!! Both men
leaning forward, shoulder to shoulder, jowl-to-jowl banging. They tangle up.
Ref breaks them, again they come forward. Bonilla aggressively, crowding the
southpaw from Philly
the final minute was a lot more tactical. Close round.
Bonilla the aggressor but Wise countered smartly and often.
Bonilla hammering away at Wise who has suddenly gone
non-violent in a neutral corner. Wise has his gloves high but Bonilla swarming
him and blasting past the guard. Wise not responding at all. Ref. steps in to
stop it. Bonilla scores a TKO!
Wise looking hurt & absolutely crestfallen on the stool
after the stoppage. Doctor Michael Schwartz examining him. Could have been a
damaged jaw that took all the fight out of Wise. Replay shows Bonilla slammed
him with a head-spinning right hand to the mouth. TKO2 Bonilla 1:20
next up from Foxwoods! Bout 3, super lightweight
Adrian Sosa of Lawrence, MA 141lbs versus Darnell Pettis 137lbs of Cleveland,
OH, 6 rounds
Adrian Sosa just scored with a lovely double left hook to
the body then head, seconds later he lands another left followed by a speedy
short right that makes Pettis do a rubber-legged giant step backwards. Sosa's
round, big time.
Pettis is a brave, aggressive guy and Sosa is smartly and
artfully nailing him on his way in, using his own momentum against him. Wow!
Another beautiful right to the chin staggers Pettis again. He refuses to go
down but he's in trouble! Sosa picking his shots. Ref steps in. TKO
The official time of the stoppage was 1:24 of round 2. And that was really a beautiful display
of speedy, accurate punching and really wise decision making in his choice of
shots. He doesn't waste anything. If a KO can look pretty and brutal, and they
can, that one sure did.
Bout 4, super welterweight Hurshidbek Normatov of Uzbekistan,
fighting out of Brooklyn, NY, 151lbs versus Alexis Gaytan 155lbs of Mission,
TX, 6rds
Normatov in charge for the first half of the first, beating
Gaytan to the punch, bloodying his lip, until Gaytan nails him with a right
that stunned him. Normatov moving more now, boxing from a distance.
Normatov landing heavily. Gaytan trying for the belly with
some success. Gaytan is being out-volumed here. Time called due to an
accidental head-butt and a bloody cut around Gaytan's right eye. Action
continues...
Gaytan is a gutsy fighter. He's bleeding and he was on the
wrong end of a vicious flurry when the fight resumes after the doc checked his
cut. Bell
Normatov has quick hands. He blasts out Gaytan's mouthpiece
with a speedy right hook in close. Gaytan still trying to land on Normatov,
hoping to stun him again like in the first.
Normatov was likely a tremendous amateur. His style is quick
of fist and foot, in and out, behind sharp, stinging straight punches and
always moving, moving, moving.
Gaytan looks clear-headed and undeterred between rounds. His
corner has done a good job on the cut.
Gaytan just fought a good round and may have gotten a little
lucky with Ref. Murdaugh's call of a knockdown in the final seconds of the 4th
when Normatov sagged into the ropes and sort of sat down on them after a hard
body shot.
Normatov has really prominent cheekbones and
"looks" like he may cut easily. Of course he's gonna have to get hit
a lot more than Gaytan is hitting him to find that out. Gaytan definitely doing
better in these rounds though. He's the aggressor, Normatov on the run at end
of 5th
OH MY GOD!! Gaytan just went to sleep from a monstrous right
hook he never saw coming. Out before he hit the floor and face first into the
canvas.
Gaytan up on the stool now. The doctors working with him.
The medical staff here in CT is top notch. They're getting him up in stages.
Gaytan on his feet now to applause from the crowd. Both fighters embrace.

The official time was :41 of round 6. Normatov now 7-0 (4)
and that's going to be a #BroadwayBoxing
highlight reel KO for twenty-eighteen.
Here comes the co-main event of the evening! @shelitosway of Providence ,

very cautious first from both these women, which I found a
little surprising considering it was their 9th together. Silgado in the role of
boxer with Vincent the aggressive puncher, pressing the action, Silgado
countering. Nothing serious landed yet.
Silgado connected with a hard right uppercut-left hook that
seemed to get Vincent's attention in round 2.
Vincent complaining to Ref. Danny Schiavone about being
elbowed. He warns Silgado to knock it off and Vincent to stop complaining and
fight.
That elbow may have lit a fire in Vincent, she comes roaring
out of her corner in the fourth. But Salgado is making Vincent work here.
Silgado landing lots of solid uppercuts. Vincent seems a little uninspired
here.
Two good left hooks from Vincent in the final seconds of the
fifth but this seems to be Salgado's fight to lose right now. Vincent needs to
pour it on in these final 3 rounds. Salgado has landed the more meaningful
shots thus far according to this observer.
Vincent is aggressive but she's not moving her head on the
way in at all and she's eating punches on her way in.
Vincent flurried a bit in the final thirty seconds of the
6th, may have stolen that round. Good body shots landed by the Rhode Islander,
good exchange in the final seconds of round 7 but again,
although Vincent did much of the pressing and coming forward, Silgado landed
the solid shots in that encounter.
Well, that one is in the books. There were several close
rounds and I'm not scoring them because I'm tweeting my ass off and it's hard
to type and see every single punch but I don't think Vincent won a single round
definitively. Maybe the first 2 close ones...
Lots of boos from this crowd for the official scorecards, a
Majority Decision goes to Vincent by scores of 76-76, overruled by two scores

Marvelous @MarvelousMyke has Doherty in lots of trouble... He's up
after two knockdowns but he's staying up on sheer will. They may stop this
between rounds.
Looked like both knockdowns were produced off of left hooks.
The first was a lot worse on Doherty than the second. He touched the canvas
with both gloves and popped right up from the second.
Doherty just landed a solid left hook of his own that got
Williams' attention. Mykquan taking his time. He's not rushing to reel Doherty
in yet, there's still fight left in him.

looked at Matt Doherty at the bell to end the third as if he was surprised the Salem
Williams landing the much flashier, significant shots but
Doherty is bolder than bold and constantly trying, fighting back competitively.

his arms as if to say "come get me! I'm still here." Williams landed
much heavier in the fifth, scoring with a big right & left hook which may

These two guys are mugging at each other at the end of each
round. Seems as if it's Williams doing most of the mocking and maybe he's a
little frustrated he hasn't been able to hurt Doherty again. He's winning these
rounds though.
this is entertaining even though @MarvelousMyke is
likely winning every round. Doherty keeps trying and the knockdowns in the
first must have been because he was cold because he's been hit a lot harder
since with no effect.
this one goes to the scorecards and it sure didn't start off
looking like it would...
The judges see that one all the same way, 80-73 x 3,
Unanimous Decision for @MarvelousMyke who learned a lot in there tonight.
Sometimes you hit a guy with your best shots & he doesn't go. Williams
never got frustrated, never walked into something foolish, he maintained his
poise.

Bout 1 is underway, William Foster, 131.75lbs of New
Haven, CT versus Tyrome Jones, 131lbs, of South Bend, IN
At the end of round 2 Jones get the worst of a head butt
that is going to make them stop this fight. He looked to be winning that round
big as well. He had landed 2 big lefts from the southpaw stance.
Bout 1 ends at 2:27
of round 2. It's gonna be called a No Contest. Round 1 belonged to Foster but
the second favored Jones.
Bout 2, Cassius Chaney, 246lbs, of New London, CT
meets Elder Hernandez, 250lbs, of Morelia, Mexico 6 rounds, heavies

That's it from Elder Hernandez! Cassius Chaney urged him to
get up but he'd been down once and knew the end was coming. TKO1 for New
London 's Cassius Chaney!
The official time was 2:47 of round number 1,

Bout 3, Larry Fryers, 146.25lbs, of New
York , NY Ireland ,
fights Anthony Woods, 150lbs, of Philadelphia , PA
These two fought furiously for the first two minutes of
round one before both tired in the final minute. As they tired Fryers was able
to land a couple hard, single shots in a close opening round.
Fryers scored a knockdown in the final seconds of the 2nd.
It looked like a brushing shot but Woods didn't complain to ref Danny
Schiavone. Likely Fryers is up by 3 points in this 6 rounder.
Lots of effort from both these fighters. Woods may have
recovered a bit on the cards in that third. Not a lot of clean blows landed by
either fighter.
Woods went back to his corner with his hands up so he has at
least convinced himself that he has recovered from the knockdown. He may be
right.
coming up on the final round here... Woods had better go for
broke if he wants this.

There had been shoving and clinching from both fighters and
there was no obvious warning to Woods but perhaps in close Ref. Schiavone saw
Woods as the troublemaker.
The judges see that one as 60-52 and 59-53 x 2 all in favor
of Fryers. So 2 judges only gave Woods a single round.
Just to clarify, that point deduction was for an INTENTIONAL
head butt that Woods even admitted to doing when Schiavone called him on it. So
it was not for shoving or grappling as it looked. Thanks to @fightpublicist for
the scoop!

Bout 4, Joe Farina, 150lbs, of South Boston, MA
versus Steve Moore, 149lbs, of Orange, NJ, 4 rounds, jr. middles
Farina walked right out and got dropped. He's up and they're slugging...

The replay shows the right hand Moore
used to drop Farina connected more on the gloves than the chin. It was a
balance shot. But Moore probably
won the first 10-8.
Farina really hammered away at Moore
in the second. Again and again he drove Moore
back along the ropes punishing him with lefts to the belly and rights to the
head.
Farina has battled back from a flash, first round knockdown.
In control of the action since then.
Final round here between these junior middles...
Bout 4 is in the books, waiting on the cards. I'm guessing
Farina lost the first and that's it. 38-37? Taking a long time to add up 4
rounds,.
One judge had it 38-37 for Moore ,
overruled by two scores of 38-37 for Joe Farina. South Boston 's
Farina remains undefeated, now 3-0 (2).
Bout 5, Wendy Toussaint, 151.5lbs, of Huntington ,
NY

Big first round for Toussaint. Gonzalez spent much of the
1st trying to cover up and grab his way through an onslaught of incoming fire
from Toussaint.
Toussaint scored a knockdown in that second round but spent
so much time getting into a neutral corner Gonzalez was able to recover.

Bout 6, Anthony Laureano, 138.25lbs, of East
Hartford, versus Juan De la Cruz Rodriguez, 139.5lbs, of Haymarket, VA,
great first round for Laureano who landed heavy shots with
both hands
these two guys are going Gatti-Ward style here. Wow. That
was about a minute of pure brawling.
Rodriguez is getting the worst of the punishment through 3
rounds. Not a lot of defense from these two.
Final round coming up for Laureano versus Rodriguez. Lots of
punches landed in this one. Gritty effort from Rodriguez but Laureano landing
cleaner and harder and more often.
wow, that was a fun fight. Rodriguez started slow but
finished strong.
The scorecards are 60-54 and 59-55 x 2 all in favor of
@GW_Relentless of East Hartford , CT, now 8-0 (3)

Reis off to a quick start which is a good sign for her. She
has a tendency to fight to the level of her opposition and hopefully after he
last bout she realizes she's the power-broker in there, she can make things
happen not wait for them to happen.
Reis landing a chopping right to the chin of Ramirez. No
body punching at all here.

And so the great Round Card Boy experiment ends not with a
bang but a whimper and some scattered boos...

round seven underway, Reis controlling the action. Boxing
smart, applying pressure. Would like to see some body-shots though.
Kali Reis should come away with the decision here, not sure
Ramirez won even a single round. She looked good.
All three judges saw it the same way, 80-72, a shut-out, in
favor of @KO_MoC86 who keeps the momentum going after her impressive showing on
HBO in May against @1LadyCecilia
Time for the Main Event! Joe Smith Jr., 179lbs, of Long
Island , NY Posrtsmouth , OH
Russell was stopped once and it was early, round 2, against
Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez and I'm guessing Smith hits harder than
that so... #buckleup
This one is over and it wasn't pretty while it lasted. Smith
put Russell down once with a chopping left and a brushing right that loosed his
mouthpiece. Ref. Steve Willis separated them, sent Smith to a neutral corner
then waved the bout on. 1/2
Willis realized he hadn't replaced the mouthpiece so he went
to the corner man of Russell who cleaned it and inserted it. The bout continued
and Smith cornered Russell and caught him with a right uppercut that ended
things.The official time of the stoppage was

Long Island light heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. returned to the
prize ring last night with a first round TKO win over Melvin Russell of
Portsmouth, OH, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. Smith was fighting
for the first time since he suffered a broken jaw in a decision loss to Cuba's
Sullivan Barrera last July 15th. Other regional fighters saw action in the ring
last night, including top-ranked female Kali Reis, boxing as a welterweight, in
her first bout since appearing on HBO in May in what was the cable outlet's
first broadcast of a female fight. Though defeated that historic night against
the best female welterweight world, Cecilia Braekhus, last night, Reis returned
to her winning ways with a unanimous decision, shut-out victory of Paty
Ramirez.

Both fighters' records remain unchanged, Foster at 8-0 (6)
and Jones at 4-3-1 (1).
Heavyweight Cassius Chaney, 246lbs, of New
London , CT Morelia , Mexico 2:47 of round number one. Within
the first minute Chaney put Hernandez down with a right hand and Ref. Steve
Willis allowed him to continue. Sensing the knockout, Chaney applied pressure
and Hernandez went down again from a brushing shot. Chaney stood over Hernandez
for a moment, urging him to get up and fight but Hernandez had done all the
fighting he wanted to do on this night. In the moments we saw, Chaney was
aggressive and willing to get small, crouch and go to Hernandez' midsection
with a lunging right. Several body shots seemed to do what plain old
intimidation had gotten started and it was pretty obvious why Hernandez made no
effort to rise.

Fryers improved to 7-1 (2) while Woods fell to 1-7-1 .
Wendy Toussaint, 151.5lbs, of Huntington , NY Worcester , MA 1:25 of round number three. Wendy
Toussaint got right to work at the opening bell, slamming Gonzalez
repeatedly with a looping overhand right. Gonzalez fought back but was
clearly outgunned and in trouble. Toussaint kept the pressure on in the second,
driving Gonzalez back and punishing for any attempts at anything resembling an
offense. In the third, Toussaint caught Gonzalez with a wild right and sent him
back into the ropes near a neutral corner. Toussaint opened up with both hands,
sneaking a left hook past Gonzalez' guard and blasting him with looping rights.
Referee Steve Willis had seen enough and stepped in to halt the fight at 1:25 of round 3.
Toussaint raised his record to 8-0 (3) while Gonzalez'
dropped to 6-2 (5)

Female welterweight, Kali Reis, 144lbs,
of Providence, RI defeated Paty Ramirez, 146.5 lbs
of Aguascalientes, Mexico by lopsided, eight round decision. Reis
started fast with a busy jab and a pressuring offense. Ramirez was game and
fought back but Reis was always in control and landing more frequently. This
Kali Reis looked very different than the one who thumped Tiffany Woodard in
this same ring back in November. Now campaigning as a welter, K.O. Mequinonoag
was a speedier and leaner-looking, fourteen and a quarter pounds lighter last
night against Ramirez than she was against Woodard. Last night there was little
in-fighting and few clinches and perhaps that's why there was far less
body-punching than she did against Woodard. She chose mobility and straight
punches to the head to dominate last night. To be critical of Reis would only be
to reiterate what she herself as stated in the past, she has a tendency to hold
back and counter rather than take initiative in her fights and this happened in
rare instances last night. At the end of eight three judges' scorecards were
80-72 in favor of Reis.

Joe Smith Jr., 179lbs, of Long
Island , NY Posrtsmouth , OH 1:45 of the opening round. Melvin
Russell had been stopped only once, back in July of twenty-seventeen he went
out in 2 against Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez, a super-middle with
hands like bricks. Well, when it comes to punching power, Joe Smith Jr.'s
thumping jolts are made of an even heavier metal than Russell had already proved
vulnerable to; this wouldn't last long. And it didn't. Smith stuck a jab in the
face of Russell and to his credit the Ohioan fired back but was quickly
overwhelmed by short chopping blasts from the Long Islander and just plain old
anxiety. Smith drove Russell back into his own corner and smacked his
mouthpiece with a wild-shot. Ref. Steve Willis reached down and picked it up
and waved the fighters to resume boxing only to pause, recognizing his error
and moving to the corner of Russell to clean and replace the mouthpiece. The
fight resumed and Smith was on Russell again. Russell tried to dip and bend out
of the way of danger but Smith ripped him with a right uppercut that put him
down for the second time. Ref Steve Willis saw there was no need for a count
and stopped the action at 1:145 of round one.

Smith improves to 24-2 (20) while Russell falls to 11-5-2 (7).
Afterwards, Smith and his promoter Joe DeGuardia said they
hoped for an autumn fight with Sergey Kovalev. "We're looking to go to the
top. The whole goal is to get the championship of the world," DeGuardia
said.
"I would have liked to get a little bit more rust
off," Smith said about his quick victory. "But I'm still happy with
the way I closed it out. I can't be mad at that."
Light heavyweight is one of the more talent-loaded divisions
in boxing today but Smith has his thoughts about who's tops.
"I believe Kovalev is the best one out there right
now(at 175). I see him working hard everyday and it motivates me to get in the
gym and train harder just so I can get a shot at him."
That's a
pretty great-looking match-up and hopefully fight-fans will get to see Sergey
Kovalev vs. Joe Smith Jr. before year's end.
